About Falmouth Age Concern

“Our population is ageing, and increasing numbers of older people are living alone. At Falmouth Age Concern, we have been working in the community to alleviate loneliness and improve the well-being of the elderly community in Falmouth, Penryn and the surrounding areas for over half a century. We run a successful volunteer befriending service, several clubs and classes, and organise a programme of summer excursions and events that run throughout the year.

Falmouth Age Concern is an independent, local charity serving Falmouth, Penryn and the surrounding villages. We have our own board of Trustees, Committee and Constitution and have to raise all of our own funds. We are not part of a large, national organisation. We work closely with Age UK and regularly partner with other local charities and groups with similar aims. We operate with three part-time members of staff and over 60 volunteers of all ages, who are the bedrock of the charity.

We have been working in the community since 1957 and have been running our befriending service since 2004. Initially set up to improve the well-being of the elderly residents of Falmouth and the surrounding area, we identified a real need to so all we could to alleviate isolation in the older community. Over 15 years ago, we were granted Big Lottery funding in to keep the service going – since the funding ran out in 2008 we have operated independently. Since then we have become relied upon by the people who need us, and as the elderly population is only set to increase, our services will remain invaluable to the people of Falmouth, Penryn and the nearby villages.”
